"As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame; / [ . . . ] Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: / Deals out that being indoors each one dwells; / Selves -- goes itself; 'myself' it speaks and spells, / Crying 'What I do is me; for that I came'." --Gerard Manley Hopkins

9/11: Never Forget

This morning I showed this video of the World Trade Center attack and collapse in my class.

The language is not English, but this is the best footage I found.

I try not to be political here at Inscapes, and I know that we can legitimately disagree about our precise response to this horrific evil. But we mustn’t forget that it happened, that it was evil, that 3000+ of our fellow citizens (most of them civilians) died at the hands of extremists who hate us and whose dearest wish is to destroy or subjugate us, and that they have not stopped and will not stop trying to achieve that goal. We cannot do nothing.

Pray for our troops and all those who have kept us safe from another major attack on our soil these past eight years. To all these -- and especially to my son -- thank you for putting yourselves in harm's way to protect us.

Amen.

Last night after a Shabbat dinner gathering i was riding back to Queens with several friends and parallel to lower Manhattan on the highway. We looked across the river and, above "Ground Zero," rose two ghostly towers of light projected into the night sky, a perfect re-creation of the height and shape of the Towers themselves. I hear New Yorkers speak of the fallen and those who risked their lives to rescue the trapped and injured - and respect fills voices that often raise in frustration or impatience with their neighbors. Some things are still holy, and they don't forget here.

Well said Alaiyo. That it happened and the naming of it as evil, is very political, though, just more in an ancient sense, wouldn't you say?

predictablepoet- I can tell you that many here in Texas have not forgotten and even more here in the military. It is rare indeed when a Texan can say such things to a New Yorker, but on this we stand together and remember.

I've seen pictures of those lights -- wow. It must be very moving to actually see.

David, yes. I wish there could be more agreement is this modern world about the terms . . .
